This is Super Bowl weekend, with this year’s big game taking place locally, at the Cardinal’s Stadium in Glendale. Since the Super Bowl began in 1967, having a group of family and friends over to watch the big game is a time-honored tradition. We’ve pulled together a few ideas to help your HVAC system keep your friends and family comfortable while cheering on their favorite team.

Replace the Filter

Replacing your HVAC air filter is a good habit every month of the year even when you’re not hosting a party. During the cooler months of the year, your sliding glass doors and windows are usually closed, and rooms tend to have more stagnant air. Often, directional ceiling fans haven’t been switched to push warm air downwards contributing to decreased indoor air quality. For your family members and guests with allergies, asthma, and COPD, replacing a dirty air filter is the quickest way to cleaner indoor air.

You’ll want to turn off your thermostat before changing your HVAC air filter. The best way to gauge whether or not your air filter needs to be replaced is to look at the filter material to see if it’s filled with dirt and dust. MERV rated air filters between 10 to 14 are recommended for capturing the most amount of dust and allergen particles in your home.

Ideal Temperature

You’ll want to keep the party going and not put a damper on it by turning down the thermostat to a too chilly setting. The Energy Star program actually recommends setting your thermostat at 68 degrees Fahrenheit during winter. This temp allows for the most efficient, cost-effective use of heat in your home.

If you set the indoor temperature over 72 degrees, you may be surprised to see guests dozing off during the big game. When the temperature is too warm, it can throw off your internal body temperature combined with food and drink, to turn the event into a slumber party. It’s all about keeping things in balance. You want to keep it warm and hospitable, but you don’t want to make it unpleasant for your guests with rooms that are freezing cold.
